Luke Pattison
Luke has been nominated for Vocational Student of the Year based on his enrolment in the Advanced Diploma of Surveying at RMIT. The Advanced Diploma of Surveying provides educational and practical training to learn techniques and utilise technology for the purpose of examining and recording areas and features of pieces of land. Luke won the RMIT College of Vocational Education Build Environment and Sustainability Student of the Year Award in 2023.
After finishing Year 12, applied for the Australian Royal Navy as this is something that he had wanted to do as a child. After not hearing anything from the Navy, Luke looked for an alternative, but did not know what to study. His mum's friend recommended land surveying after seeing how happy her son was studying it. Luke had no idea what it was and decided to do some research. He thought it sounded fascinating. What appealed to him was that land surveying would enable him to work both outside and inside and with new technologies.
Luke began the Diploma of Surveying in 2018 and really enjoyed it but received a job offer with the Navy. Though a difficult decision, Luke decided to pursue his childhood dream and work for the Navy. Luke's goal was to take this opportunity with the Navy and then go back to study. After 4 years with the Navy, Luke recommenced his studies, completing his Diploma of Surveying and the Advanced Diploma of Surveying.
Though land surveying was an area of study that Luke fell into by chance, he thought that it matched his interests and skills set and satisfied his desire to work in a job that required solving complex problems and working with others. He has commenced studying the Bachelor of Surveying at RMIT.
While studying the Advanced Diploma, Luke discovered that he has a passion for problem solving and derives immense satisfaction from overcoming these challenges. This was evident during completing assignments that related to cadastral surveying which required him to come up with solutions about property boundary issues that ensured accuracy. Luke also learnt that he thrives in environments that require adaptability and resilience, and it's this self-awareness that has allowed him to embrace challenges with confidence and a positive mindset.
